The Betty G. Headley award annually honours essays written by upper year undergraduate students, which are distinguished by their eloquence, originality, and persuasive power. The financial awards for a course-related essay ($1,500) and a personal essay ($500) are presented at St. Jerome's University's Graduation Ceremony each year. 
 
The contest is overseen by the university’s Librarian Lorna Rourke, who with the members of a Selection Committee, currently comprised of Professors Carol Acton, Mark Spielmacher, and Rade Zinaic, reviews all submissions.
 
Please follow the steps below to guide you through the submission process.
STEP 1: Review the eligibility requirements.

Please confirm that you are eligible for participation in the Betty G. Headley Award by reviewing the following prerequisites:

 

Course-related Essay ($1,500 Award)

Essays written for any third or fourth year level course taught at St. Jerome's University or any University of Waterloo campus or affiliated institution may be submitted by students currently registered at St. Jerome’s University, Renison University College, or the University of Waterloo. Essays written for courses may be revised prior to submission.

 
Personal Essay ($500 Award)
Personal reflective essays written expressly for this competition by students currently registered at St. Jerome’s University, Renison University College, or University of Waterloo. Personal reflective essays written expressly for this award competition must be identified as such.
 
 
STEP 2: Complete the entry form.

A completed entry form must accompany all submissions and must be received no later than the posted deadline date.

 

The deadline date for 2020 entries has yet to be announced, but will be posted here with the entry form when available.

 

 
STEP 3: Follow the submission guidelines.

Please note that entries failing to meet the guidelines will not be considered for this award.

STEP 4: Submit an electronic or hard copy of your essay and entry form.
Hardcopy submissions are preferred, but electronic submissions will be accepted up until the deadline date, which has yet to be announced for the 2020 contest.
 
Hardcopy submissions
Please place a hard copy of your submission with your completed 2020 entry form (when available), in the “Headley Senior Essay Award” drop box located in the main floor entry way of Sweeney Hall.
 
Electronic Submissions
Electronic submissions should be emailed with your completed 2020 entry form (when available), using “Headley submission” as the subject line.
 
All submissions will be reviewed by the Betty G. Headley Award Selection Committee and winners will be notified.
 
 
STEP 5: Don't miss the deadline

Please do not be disappointed by missing the deadline for submissions. The deadline date for 2020 entries has yet to be announced, but will be posted here when available.
