The Betty G. Headley Senior Essay Award annually honours essays written by upper year undergraduate students, which are distinguished by their eloquence, originality, and persuasive power. The financial awards are $1,500 for a course-related essay and $500 for a personal essay. All submissions are reviewed by a Selection Committee comprised of SJU Faculty members.

Thank you to everyone who submitted an entry this past December for the 2023 Betty G. Headley Award. The Committee will be reviewing these submissions in late January 2024 and will notify winners shortly thereafter.

    • the student’s UW ID number should appear on the front page of the essay and as a footer on each page.
  • Essays written for courses may be revised prior to submission.
  • Personal reflective essays written expressly for this award competition must be identified as such.
  • Copies of submissions will not be returned.
  • Essays should have been written in the 2023 calendar year.
