BIOGRAPHY

Prashanth Chandrapal is Legal Counsel at the Law Society of Ontario’s Investigation Services & Professional Regulation Division.

 

Prior to joining the Law Society, Prashanth practised class actions, civil litigation, and family law. He also represented children in child protection proceedings as appointed counsel on behalf of the Personal Rights Legal Panel of the Office of the Children’s Lawyer (OCL).

 

During law school, Prashanth summered at the Toronto Crown Attorney’s Office, interned at a criminal defence firm in Ottawa and completed a placement at the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto, where he worked closely with the judiciary on family and criminal law matters.

 

Prashanth’s research focuses on inequalities in the criminal justice system. His master’s thesis is titled, “Unequal Justice: The Relevance of Race and Social Disadvantage in Sentencing under the Criminal Code of Canada.” His major research paper in law school is titled, “Addressing the Over-Representation of Indigenous Peoples in the Criminal Justice System - Lessons Learned From Gladue and the Application of Section 718.2(e) of the Criminal Code Post-Ipeelee.

 

Outside of his legal practice, Prashanth is actively engaged in the community. He has contributed as a legal consultant with For Youth Initiative, a not-for-profit organization providing programming and services to youth, and has served on various boards, including the Family Lawyers’ Association, and the Tamil Bar Association. Prashanth is also member of the Ontario Bar Association (OBA), South Asian Bar Association (SABA) and the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (FACL).
