The Catholic Church and the Environment

The Rio summit focused peoples’ attention on the environment and development as the crucial issues of our time. In truth they are issues of human survival. Unfortunately the Christian Churches have been slow to understand the proper magnitude of what is happening and to address it in an effective way. Fr. Sean McDonagh will talk about the Catholic Church and the evnironment

Fr. Sean McDonagh

Fr. Sean McDonagh was born in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. He was educated at the De la Salle College, Waterford and St. Columban’s College, Dalgon Park, Vavan, Co. Meath. Ordained in 196, he went on Mission to Mindanao in the Philippines from 1969-1972. He studied Linguistics and Anthropology at the Catholic University and at Georgetown University in Washington. Returning to the Philippines in 1975, he taught anthropology in the Mindanao State University until 197o9. From 1979-1989 he worked in the Santa Cruz Mission in Minanao, amongst the tribal people. Fr. McDonagh is the author of tow books: "The care for the Earth" and "the Greening of the Church". He also writes articles for various magazines and newspapers including "The Tablet" and "The Irish Times". At present Fr. McDonagh is Justice and Peace Coordinator for the Columgan Society world-wide.
