HOST TO HOME MINKA EXPLORES SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE COMMUNITY

In partnership with Reception House Waterloo Region, St. Jerome’s University will be hosting its second MINKA on October 27 and 28, 2017. The topic of discussion for this year’s event is “Host to Home: Deepening connections and understanding the refugee journey in Kitchener-Waterloo.”

Minka is a Quechua word that represents the coming together of people to work collaboratively on a common project that benefits an entire community. It is a call to action where community members work side by side towards a common goal, bringing the expertise they have from their daily lives and placing it alongside the expertise of another. In solidarity, community members are empowered to create changes that have lasting impact in the community.

Following the success of last Minka, St. Jerome’s University is helping to bring people together to identify approaches to the complex issue of refugee settlement and to be part of developing approaches to make change in the community[MM1] . Through story sharing, dialogue, empathy building, and design practices it will explore the journey of settlement in the Waterloo Region, and help discover how the community can move from acting as hosts to creating a home of belonging. Throughout the Minka, the focus will be on the particular topics of Housing, Communication/Literacy, and Health.

“All members of the community are invited to be part of this conversation. Bringing many different perspectives to the table is a key part of the success of this event,” stated MINKA organizer and St. Jerome’s University Outreach Programs Coordinator, Bess Mitchell.
