SJU Student Leadership Profiles: Interviewing AAC's and SAT's
29 Nov, 2019

St. Jerome’s has an awesome team of student leaders that work together to organize fun and engaging events and activities for our community! Some examples of past events and activities that the team has coordinated include Paint Night, Fall Activities Day at Nauman’s Farm, a Fall Formal, a visit to the St. Jacob’s Farmers Market, Community Dinners, and Coffee Houses (which happen about once a month).

The Assistant Activities Coordinators (AAC’s) manage the Student Activities Team (SAT’s), and help them develop personally and professionally throughout the semester. Both of these groups function under the direction and guidance of Lorena (our Community Advisor for Student Activities), and Emily (our Spirituality and Student Development Advisor).

Why did you choose St. Jerome’s University?
TJ: As soon as I toured SJU, I knew this was going to be my home-away-from-home. Little did I know that the person who gave me one of the best tours of my life would end up being my Don in my first year at SJU.
What is your favourite course that you have taken at university so far, and what made it so great?
TJ: My favourite course so far was AFM 204 (Introduction to Applied Finance). Professor Balaban elevates the classroom and transcends a typical university class.
What extracurricular activities have you been involved with throughout your time at university?
TJ: Relay for Life at St. Jerome’s, Accounting and Finance Student Association (as the VP of Corporate Relations), and the Student Investment Fund.

Gabi: I loved the community aspect of it, and I had heard amazing things about it from friends in my hometown!
What are some examples of events and activities that for the community that you have been involved with?
G: I was a member of the Student Activities Team in the past, and we ran social events such as Haunted Houses at Halloween, and Escape Rooms to get to know SJU. We also did stress-busters such as arts-and-crafts at exam time and coffee houses throughout the year, where people showed off their talents in a very supportive environment!
What is your favourite course that you have taken at university so far, and what made it so great?

Lillian is in her second year of Honours Arts, and she is from Guelph, ON. She is majoring in Gender and Social Justice, and minoring in Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies.

Why did you choose St. Jerome’s University?
Lillian: I chose SJU because of the home-y feeling that I experienced when touring! But beyond that, it was the commitment to sustainability and student development through local and global opportunities that drew me here.
What is an interesting fact about St. Jerome’s?
L: That we’re a Fair Trade certified campus!
What is your favourite course that you have taken at university so far, and what made it so great?
L: So far my favourite class would have to be WS 102 (Contemporary Women’s Issues in Canada). I found this class to be really fantastic because I learned a lot about injustices facing different groups of Canadians. The course covered what is going on in our country, and shed some light on things we don’t often talk about and the aspects of our country that I wasn’t previously aware of. Definitely an eye opener!
What extracurricular activities have you been involved with throughout your time at university?
L: Since starting at SJU I have been involved as a first year Floor Representative, Experience Guide, SJU in Peru participant, and am currently a Student Activities Team member and Beyond Borders participant!

Why did you choose St. Jerome’s University?

M: That there is unlimited chocolate milk in the cafeteria!
What are some examples of events and activities that for the community that you have been involved with?
M: One event I was recently involved with was our Café Crawl, where we organized a group of residents to take the ION train over to Uptown Waterloo, we explored Uptown and treated the residents to any drink of their choice at the cafes there. It gave those who haven’t had a chance yet to see what Uptown Waterloo has to offer. It was also a fun and relaxing opportunity to meet new friends.
How did you decide what you wanted to study?
M: All my life I’ve loved STEM, and with both my parents being pharmacists, I was exposed to the world of medicine and its possibilities to impact and better the lives of others at an early age. So for as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to pursue a career in medicine.
What extracurricular activities have you been involved with throughout your time at university?
M: At SJU, I have been an Experience Guide, Floor Representative, and Frost Leader. Currently, I am a member of the Student Activities Team, and I am a Frost Leader Advisor. Outside of SJU, I have participated in intramural sports including basketball, volleyball, and soccer. I’m also a member of HOSA Waterloo.

Emily is in her second year of Honours Arts and Business, co-op. She is majoring in Theatre and Performance. Her hometown is Hamilton, ON.

Why did you choose St. Jerome’s University?
Emily: I chose SJU because they are the most caring and welcoming community on campus (it truly is a home away from home) AND their facilities are quite beautiful!
What is an interesting fact about St. Jerome’s?
E: There are so many exciting student leadership opportunities to get involved in! You grow as a person, you make great friends, and you have a lot of fun!
What is your favourite course that you have taken at university so far, and what made it so great?
E: In my first year, I took THPERF 100 (Introduction to Theatre), where our final assessment was to create our own adapted production of a scene from an existing play (studied in the course), and perform it. We were assigned groups to design the costumes, lighting, set, and sound, and then perform our production in front of an audience in the Modern Languages Theatre of the Arts! It took a lot of work, but it was really gratifying!
What are some examples of events and activities that for the community that you have been involved with?
This year, we have run events like SJ Haunted House (a spooky Halloween event), Coffee House (a chill event that showcases our student’s talents with treats and hot beverages; it’s a good time), and Fall Formal.
What extracurricular activities have you been involved with throughout your time at university?
E: Last year, I joined Culture Clash Theatre Club (CCTC), I became a Frost Leader at SJU, and I volunteered at SJU for Open House events. Most recently, I became a member of the Student Activities Team at SJU as well.
