SJU Student Leadership Profile: Meet the Student Campus Ministry Team (SCMT)
15 Nov, 2019

What is Student Campus Ministry at St. Jerome's?

Student Campus Ministry at St. Jerome’s is managed by Martha Fauteux (the Director of Campus Ministry), Emily Litster (the Spirituality and Student Development Advisor), and the Student Campus Ministry Team.

Emily describes Campus Ministry at St. Jerome’s as a resource that’s available for all of our students and members of our community- everyone is welcome to participate in our programs and liturgies! By focusing on the holistic development of the whole person, everyone involved with the Student Campus Ministry hopes to help students develop spiritually.

There is a variety of supports and programming that the Student Campus Ministry provides. Emily shares that “some of our favourite events are the Busy Students Retreat where students meet with a mentor to ask questions about spirituality, or our Monday Morning Meditations (fondly known as Mmmediation!) – there’s lots of ways to get involved with Campus Ministry at SJU.

The Campus Ministry is housed in the Spirituality Centre. Emily describes the Spirituality Centre as a place “where students can hang out, enjoy fellowship after our Sunday liturgy, or just catch up on some homework! You can also find a quiet place to reflect in our Quiet Reflection Room.”

Jacob M.

Jacob is in his fourth year of Honours French, with a Teaching Specialization. He is also completing a double minor in Religious Studies, and Applied Language Studies. His hometown is Waterloo, ON. Jacob enjoys building connections with students in all years and programs through this position, and the opportunity to give back to the St. Jerome’s community through his leadership and involvement.

What do you do for the St. Jerome’s community in your leadership position?
Jacob: I develop social justice programming for students of all faith or no-faith backgrounds. We help organize the 7 PM mass on Sunday evenings, and we encourage students to attend to all parts of themselves (socially, intellectually, and spiritually). We do this by motivating students to explore different aspects of their faith that they may not have approached previously. We also offer students the ability to embody their commitment to social justice by participating in community service initiatives, outside of the SJ community.

Why did you choose to attend St. Jerome’s?
J: I was looking for a Catholic university, rooted in social justice. I’m from Waterloo, and I heard great stories from SJU students, and alumni, who encouraged me to apply to further my passion for social justice and leadership.

What would you say is unique about the St. Jerome’s experience?
J: The strong sense of community- entering the Community Centre and seeing people you know. I am proud to be an SJU student because of the ways we care about our global community, and how we learn beyond the classroom.

Diane is in her fourth year of Honours Arts and Business. She is majoring in French, and pursuing a French Teaching Specialization. Her hometown is Stayner, ON.

What do you do for the St. Jerome’s community in your leadership position?
Diane: We are here to support and serve all students, regardless of faith or spirituality. Our primary focus is the Sunday evening student Mass and Social. We also run programming throughout the term. It looks a bit different every year but some examples from this term are a community knitting event, volunteering at a community supper, Christmas carolling, and an event that combines student art creations and wellness.

What would you like students to know about Campus Ministry at St. Jerome’s?
D: Campus Ministry is here to serve all students. University is a period of transition and religion is a piece of that. You may be coming from a religious household, or a secular high school, and you may find yourself getting curious about religion and spirituality. Regardless of where you are in your faith journey, or what questions you have, we are happy to help you find the right place for you!

Why did you choose to attend St. Jerome’s?
D: When I visited SJU it felt like home. I was able to imagine myself as a student here, living in residence, attending classes, and participating in programming.

What would you say is unique about the SJU experience?
Madeleine: At SJU, you are more than just a student. You really get to know the other residents you live with and the people in your classes. This is a great opportunity to make lifelong friends! In addition, there are lots of ways to contribute to community life throughout your entire degree.

What would you like students to know about Campus Ministry at St. Jerome’s?
M: The Student Campus Ministry Team is here to provide opportunities for students to grow spiritually, regardless of religious affiliation. We have lots of opportunities for students to participate, such as our weekly 7pm Sunday mass, busy students retreat, and volunteering events.

An interesting fact about SJU:
M: Sweeney hall is a great place to study and relax! Sometimes when you are studying, someone will be playing the piano in the piano room. It is really nice to listen to live music while doing school work!
