The Students’ Union at St. Jerome’s University (SJU) is very actively involved in our community. They coordinate healthy and sustainable initiatives such as our Farmer’s Basket program. They also run many events and initiatives to ensure upper year students remain involved and included in our community.

Meet the President: Lauren
Lauren is in her third year of Honours Arts and Business, with a major in Political Science, and a minor in Gender and Social Justice.

What is the Students’ Union at SJU?
Lauren: St. Jerome’s Students’ Union is a group of SJU students, who are elected by SJU students, to represent SJU students. Our team advocates for St. Jerome’s students, residents, and other members of the community. We work hard to improve the community by gathering, voicing, and actioning student feedback.

What does your role as President entail?
L: As the President of Students’ Union, I have a seat at a number of exciting tables. I advocate for our students on the St. Jerome’s Board of Governors as well as the University of Waterloo Committee of Presidents. I also support a team of driven students to organize initiatives and advocate for the community in their respective roles.

What does the Students’ Union advocate for?
L: Our team advocates for our students! When we were campaigning, our platform focused on environmental sustainability, student mental wellness, upper-year engagement, and transparency. The pillars we were elected on inform the decisions we make on a daily basis in our roles.

As President, what would you like to tell potential future students about SJU?
L: SJU makes students feel safe, without encouraging complacency. It is a unique community filled with intentional and compassionate people who are committed to growth and learning. Like anything, you will get as much out of the community as you put in. If you’re willing to do the work, SJU gives students a unique opportunity to become the students, leaders, and people they have always wanted to be.
