Honor BRABAZON, Associate Professor in SJU’s Department of Sociology and Legal Studies, partnered with the University of Waterloo to organize two online public lectures this year as part of a Joint Legal Studies Seminar series. |
Chris BURRIS, Professor of Psychology, looks forward to the release of his first book, Evil in Mind: The Psychology of Harming Others. The book was selected by its publisher, Oxford University Press, to be featured at the world’s largest fair for publishing—the Frankfurt Book Fair, which took place in October. Canada was the guest of honour at this year’s fair. |
Tristanne CONNOLLY, Associate Professor in the Department of English, will be speaking on January 27, 2022, as part of this year's online lecture series, "Asia and the Regency", at Jane Austen & Co. (www.janeaustenandco.org). Tristanne’s talk titled, "Emma in Bollywood: The Small World of Aisha", is about a 2010 movie adaptation that sets Austen's story in 21st-century Delhi. The series is free and open to the public. Jane Austen & Co. is a public humanities project based in the English and Comparative Literature Department of the University of North Carolina. Their series on "Asia and the Regency" is inspired by Austen in Asia, a collection of essays Tristanne is currently co-editing with one of the series co-hosts, Kimiyo Ogawa, a professor at Sophia University in Tokyo. Austen in Asia is also planned to be a volume in a book series Tristanne co-edits on Asia Pacific and Literature in English (https://link.springer.com/series/16211) |

Diana will also be coordinating the new KWLT studio series, Our Stories, Our Home, to be presented in May 2022. This studio series will both hold space open and create outreach to the diverse ethnic, cultural and theatre traditions that call Kitchener-Waterloo home to foster a more accurate understanding of who the KW community is. Carol Ann MACGREGOR, Vice President Academic and Dean, was elected Chairperson of the Advisory Board of the Higher Education Consortia (HEC) at the University of Delaware. The Advisory Board supports the Consortia’s mission and provides guidance to improve The Cost Study’s data quality and security. The Study is an international discipline-level, comparative analysis of faculty teaching loads, direct instructional costs, and separately budgeted scholarly activity. |
David SELJAK, Professor of Religious Studies and Coordinator of SJU’s Lectures in Catholic Experience, spoke in December with Professor of Theological and Social Ethics at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, and author of the award-winning Resisting Structural Evil: Love as Ecological-Economic Vocation, Cynthia Moe-Lobeda. The lecture was part of the John Albert Hall Lecture Series at the University of Victoria. The topic was “Resisting Structural Evil: Climate, Economy, and Hope”. The content focused on climate justice as possibly being the foremost climate challenge of the 21st century. |

Staff
Melissa CARVALHAL, BA Hons ’09 (Psychology and Legal Studies and Criminology Option), has changed titles at SJU to Interim Manager, Residence and Business Operations. In this role, she is responsible for leading all residence operations, including marketing, recruitment, admissions, residences processes, fees and finance. She also has oversight for the business operations over the university, including conference services, short-term stay accommodations, food services and parking. |

Dick (Richard) CALLAHAN, BA ’62, (shown on right in photo, with fellow alumni and radio host Mike Farwell, BA '96), passed away on January 29, 2021. A faithful university supporter and donor, Dick was the recipient of the Fr. Norm Choate Award, the highest level of recognition given by the University to a member of the alumni who has demonstrated extraordinary accomplishment in their professional life. Callahan attended St. Jerome’s College (as the university was known at the time) and played for the University of Waterloo’s men’s basketball team. He served as the Golden State Warriors basketball team public address announcer for 18 seasons, but is most well-known in the Bay Area in California, as the public address announcer who voiced the Oakland Athletics (A’s) baseball games for 15 seasons. Callahan worked his 1,000th game for the A’s on May 7, 2019, but had been absent from the PA booth for the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, due to health reasons. |
Fr. Edward John Rowell JACKMAN, O.P. passed away on June 18, 2021, further to a brief illness. “Father Ed” was known to generations of Canadian scholars and church history enthusiasts. He devoted his life and resources to the study and publication of works examining the history of Christianity in Canada, including Enthusiasm for the Truth: An Illustrated History of St. Jerome’s University (2002). |
