Director, Finance and Accounting (Permanent, Full-time, On-site)

POSITION PROFILE                                                                              

 

The Director of Finance and Accounting functions as the University’s Controller, reporting to the CFO. They are responsible for planning, directing and coordinating all operational functions of the Finance and Accounting department. They manage the integrated approach to capital and budget development as well as the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of financial services, operational accounting (accounts receivable, accounts payable), reporting and control systems, and financial analysis.

How will you contribute as the Director, Finance and Accounting?

 

  • Overall management of the Finance and Accounting department including preparation of monthly departmental reports and financial statements, cash management, and University payroll operations
  • Manage small team of finance and accounting professionals
  • Responsible for all external and internal reporting including the preparation of the annual audited financial statement package
  • Develop and maintain the operating and capital budgets by working in collaboration with Senior Administration and budget owners to compile and present budget details
  • Prepare and file external monthly, quarterly, and annual reports as required
  • Provide and implement unbiased interpretations of university financial policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Ensure adequate financial controls exist for the acquisition, retention, and disposal of the University’s physical assets
  • Ensure all relevant financial information is professionally prepared and presented in a timely manner to Senior Administration to facilitate appropriate analysis and decision-making
  • Review investment portfolio and verify compliance with the University’s investment policy
  • Work with decision-makers and accountable organizational members to develop financial literacy in the budget preparation and management process
  • Recommend and implement improvements to financial processes
  • Ensure compliance with all tax and payroll legislation

 

 

As a successful Director, Finance and Accounting, you possess:

 

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting or related discipline
  • CPA Designation required (or in progress)
  • 5+ years progressively responsible accounting experience required
  • Leadership experience an asset
  • Experience with data collection, data management and financial analysis
  • Demonstrated personal initiative and sound judgment
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills 
  • Familiarity with Not-for-Profit Sector accounting, with a preference for post-secondary institutions
  • Ability to manage financial operations, including budget development, financial planning, reporting and internal controls
  • Adherence to confidentiality of information and demonstrates honesty, and integrity of the highest quality
  • Strong analytical skills with a commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
  • Advanced technical skill in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 and the use of business analysis platforms an asset
