SJU Welcomes New University of Waterloo President
St. Jerome’s University welcomes Dr. Vivek Goel to the role of seventh University of Waterloo (UW) president and vice chancellor, further to UW’s announcement last evening. Goel will succeed Feridun Hamdullahpur in the role when he begins a five-year term on July 1, 2021. Hamdullahpur has served as president and vice chancellor of the University of Waterloo since 2010.
“On behalf of St. Jerome’s University, I want to welcome Dr. Goel and congratulate him on his appointment as the next president and vice chancellor of the University of Waterloo,” noted Peter Meehan, St. Jerome’s University’s president and vice chancellor. ”As UW’s Catholic federated university partner, and building on our positive relationship with his predecessor, Dr. Feridun Hamdullahpur, I am looking forward to working with him to advance the mission of the University in the years to come.”
Goel is a distinguished scholar with extensive achievements in research, teaching and leadership across both public and private sectors. He has held a number of senior leadership roles at the University of Toronto, including President and Provost and Vice-President Research and Innovation. He is recognized in Canada and around the world as a leading public-health researcher, health-service evaluation expert, and champion for the use of research evidence in health policy making.
The appointment represents the culmination of an almost year-long effort by a 19-member presidential nominating committee comprised of students, staff, faculty, and the Board of Governors, in consultation with stakeholders across campus and the broader community.
