MacGregor Named SJU’s Vice President Academic and Dean
St. Jerome’s University (SJU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Carol Ann MacGregor, PhD to the position of Vice President Academic and Dean (VPAD), effective August 16, 2021. The VPAD position is the Academic Leader at the university, a member of the Senior Administrative Team, and a key relationship builder with both internal and external partners, including the University of Waterloo. The announcement by the Board of Governors follows a six-month recruitment process.
“Dr. MacGregor’s strong academic background, experience in senior leadership, and understanding of Catholic post-secondary education make her a great fit for the role of VPAD at St. Jerome’s University,” noted the university’s outgoing Board of Governor’s Chair, Mary Ellen Cullen. “The Board of Governors thanks President Meehan and the work of the Search committee that brought Dr. MacGregor’s recommendation for approval by the Board. We look forward to welcoming Dr. MacGregor to SJU and the Waterloo community.”
“The Board also extends our gratitude to Dr. Cristina Vanin,” added Cullen, “who has served as Interim Vice President Academic and Dean for the past three years. She has done so with a deep commitment to service for our students, faculty and staff, as well as the local and provincial Catholic community of which she is an integral member.”
Originally from Trenton, Ontario, MacGregor returns to Canada further to serving as the Vice Provost of Academic Affairs and an Associate Professor of Sociology, at Loyola University New Orleans, a Jesuit college, in the United States. In her role at Loyola she was responsible for a portfolio that included Institutional Research, Accreditation, Student Success, and Summer School operations. She also worked on faculty development, supporting innovative pedagogies, and fostering the development of new programs and strategic initiatives. MacGregor received awards from the College of Social Science for Teaching (2015), the College of Arts and Sciences for Advising (2017), and the University Senate Award for Excellence in Service (2018), and was named an Associate Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia.
MacGregor obtained her PhD in Sociology from Princeton University (Princeton, New Jersey); an MA from McGill University (Montreal, QC); and her BA from Queen’s University (Kingston, ON). She brings a history of administrative and leadership roles to the VPAD position at SJU, as well as a strong background and interest in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives developed during her time at Loyola. Her research on Catholic Kindergarten-Grade 12 education, religious non-affiliation and religion and civic engagement, has appeared in journals including American Catholic Studies, American Sociological Review, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, and Social Science Research. MacGregor’s papers have received best article awards from the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the American Sociological Association section on Altruism, Morality, and Social Solidarity.
“Throughout the search process I was continuously impressed by the SJU community’s commitment to excellence in liberal arts education, deep concern for students inside and outside of the classroom, and desire to foster graduates who contribute positively to the world,” noted MacGregor, reflecting on her new role and the search process that brought her to St. Jerome’s. “I look forward to joining the administrative team as chief academic officer and to working in conjunction with faculty and staff to welcome students this fall.”
SJU’s President and Vice Chancellor, Peter Meehan noted, “I am very excited to have Dr. Carol Ann MacGregor join our senior administrative team. I am confident she will be an enormous asset as we pursue our mission to serve the needs of the church and the world as the federated Catholic university partner to the University of Waterloo.”
St. Jerome’s University will prepare for the transition in the VPAD role supported by Meehan and the Executive Director Finance and Administration, Mike Gourlay sharing the VPAD responsibilities until August 16th.
