LCE Launches Online Lecture Series in March
St. Jerome's University’s (SJU) Lectures in Catholic Experience (LCE) is launching an online series in March. After 39 years of providing complimentary lectures to the local community on campus, LCE is responding to the pandemic by changing its in-person format to offer them online. The “Hope in the Time of COVID!” series will feature four presentations over the next four months.
“In response to the COVID-19 restrictions, the Lectures in Catholic Experience—like all on-campus, public gatherings–were put on hiatus this past year,” noted LCE Coordinator, David Seljak. “As the circumstances around the world worsen, as chaos, confusion and nihilism grow, the need for hope increases. We present the 2021 Lectures in Catholic Experience as part of the call to hope. We are excited to offer this series online.”
The first lecture in the series takes place on Wednesday, March 17th at 4:00 p.m. featuring David Perrin, PhD who addresses the topic, "The Collapse of Self-Transcendence: COVID-19 and Meaning-Making in Everyday Life." Perrin is SJU’s former President and Vice Chancellor, past president of the International Society for the Study of Christina Spirituality, and author of five books on spirituality, including his most recent The 20-Minute Retreat: 18 Sessions With the Saints to Nourish Your Faith (Novalis 2019). The lecture is being co-sponsored by LCE and the University’s Master of Catholic Thought program.
The series continues on Friday, April 23rd at 7:30 p.m. with “Progressive or Conservative? Archbishop Pocock and the Renewal of the Church in Canada”, featuring current SJU President and Vice Chancellor Peter Meehan; on Friday, May 14th, 7:30 p.m. with “The Black Church in Canada”, presented by Carol Duncan, a professor in the Department of Religion and Culture at Wilfrid Laurier University; and on Friday, June 11th at 7:30 p.m. with “No Power Higher: 12 Step Recovery without God”, with speaker Zachary Munro, a University of Waterloo Doctoral Candidate and Researcher for the Non-religion in a Complex Future Project.
Everyone is welcome to attend these lectures and no registration is required. To find out more about the series and for the Microsoft Team links to each event, please visit the Lectures in Catholic Experience page on this website.
