Dr. Cristina Vanin is the Interim Vice President Academic and Dean of St. Jerome’s University. Dr. Scott Kline, the Interim President, appointed Dr. Vanin as the Interim Vice President Academic and Dean (VPAD), effective October 3, 2019, recognizing her extensive service to the University.
Dr. Vanin trained as a theologian and ethicist at Boston College before joining the St. Jerome’s faculty in 1996 as a member of the Department of Religious Studies. She served as Associate Dean from 2008-2011, and again from 2014-2019, working collaboratively with colleagues at the University of Waterloo on the UWaterloo Undergraduate Communications Initiative, and on academic integrity. Prior to this appointment as VPAD, Dr. Vanin had been serving as Acting Dean.
Dr. Vanin has taken on numerous leadership roles at St. Jerome’s: Director of the Master of Catholic Thought (MCT) program, Chair of the Department of Religious Studies, Coordinator of the Lectures in Catholic Experience and the SJU 150th Anniversary Lectures, Acting Chair of the Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Department, and has been involved in the various SJU service learning programs, to name a few. Dr. Vanin has also held leadership positions at the University of Waterloo including Undergraduate Office for the UWaterloo Department of Religious Studies, and representative of the Affiliated and Federated Institutions on the Human Research Ethics Committee.
Dr. Vanin has been actively involved in the supervision of MCT students in addition to her own research and publications on feminist theology, science and theology, and teaching theology. Her current research focuses on the role that theology can have in helping us respond adequately to the ecological crisis.
Dr. Vanin has served on national and local boards, including the Canadian Theological Society where she served as President from 2014-2015, Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region, where she served as Board Chair from 2007-2011, and the Ignatius Jesuit Centre, where she served as Board Chair from 2015-2017. She currently serves as the SJU representative to the Catholic Education Partnership Steering Committee for the Diocese of Hamilton.
Dr. Vanin and her husband Michael Kelly are the parents of two girls, Sofia and Daniela.
Dr. Vanin is looking forward to working with faculty on growth and development of our academic programming, and to celebrating the opening of the renovated and expanded SJU library with all of its opportunities for new, student-focused, programming.
