Grade Ten Family Night
27 Feb, 2020

Hi Blog Readers!

Media Folder:

In today's post we will be exploring the event, Grade Ten Family Night that the Outreach and Recruitment Department was involved in, on February 20th, 2020.

Grade 10 Family Night is a night held on Waterloo campus that allows grade 10 students the chance to explore the University of Waterloo and learn a bit about the faculties and what is available as they head into their upper years of high school. This is beneficial in that it allows students the chance to have an idea of a path they might want so they can take the classes they will need for a faculty of interest for them in their eleventh and twelfth year of school. As well it starts to prepare them and give them a foundation of knowledge that they can take with them to their twelfth year when they may start the application process.

The University of Waterloo website provides come pointers for students on how best to prepare for their upcoming years as they prepare to come to university. Their list of ten points are as follows:

  1. Think about what interests you and what hobbies you're passionate about. You never know, this could determine what you'll study and the type of job you'll have one day.
  2. Have a chat with your guidance counsellor, parent or guardian, and teachers. They can be great listeners and might even be able to offer you some advice.
  3. Use your community volunteer hours to gain valuable experience and explore career possibilities by shadowing someone who's working in a field you're interested in.
  4. Keep track of your achievements. Win any competitions? Make it to OFSAA? Remember these wins so you can tell us about them when you apply to university.
  5. Research like crazy. Go to the Ontario Universities' Fair in September, review university admissions brochures, and look up some universities of interest on the web. Get to know the academic landscape and what's available to you.
  6. Look for ways you can get involved in extracurricular activities to boost your resumé and supplement your application to university.
  7. Consider co-op. It's a great way to fund your studies while also gaining hands-on experience.
  8. Learn what courses you need to take in Grade 11 and 12 to apply to your program of interest. Remember, some universities use marks from Grade 11 when making admissions decisions.
  9. Think about how you're going to pay for university. There are some great scholarship websites listed below.
  10. Ask as many questions as possible.

Grade Ten Family Night is split into two different parts, the first being a faculty fair and the second being a presentation done by members of the University of Waterloo community. For the faculty fair portion of the evening every faculty at the University of Waterloo, including two of the university colleges, had booths set up and grade ten students and their family had the ability to go the booths and ask questions of the people who were present at each booth and were actively engaged in the faculty they were discussing. The faculty fair was held in the Hagey Hub in the Hagey Hall Arts Building. For St. Jerome’s Madie and Olivia were the speakers at the booth and answered students questions about what a University College is and why St. Jerome’s is a great choice for students who enjoy and are looking for a tight-knit small community. For the speaker session that occurred after the faculty fair, it was held at the Humanities Theatre in the Hagey Hall Arts Building. During this performance multiple speakers presented on different aspects of being a university of Waterloo student from academics to finances, getting involved on campus and current students speaking about their experiences as being students.

The full presentation portion of the evening can be found on the University of Waterloo website as a video that showcases the speaker and the accompanying slides: https://livestream.com/accounts/2091193/events/8998978/videos/202117580
