At St. Jerome's University, teaching excellence and undergraduate education
are the highest priorities. For nearly 150 years, the University has offered
full-time and part-time students a wide range of courses taught by exceptional
professors. This small but vigorous academic community is currently looking
for dedicated people to serve on its Board of Governors. Giving your time and
talents to the Board of Governors will help St. Jerome's to continue to offer a
superior university experience to students in years to come. During your time
on the Board, you will have the opportunity to meet people from many areas of
business and education, share your expertise, and develop new skills along the way.
The St. Jerome’s University (SJU) Board of Governors may include up to 27 members.
Over one-third are drawn from the SJU community (the Chancellor, the President and
Vice-Chancellor, the Vice-President and Academic Dean, two students, two faculty,
two staff, and one graduate). As a public Roman Catholic university that is
historically associated with the educational vision of the Congregation of the
Resurrection, the Board of Governors also includes the Provincial Superior of the
Congregation of the Resurrection and the representative of the Bishop of the Diocese
of Hamilton. The remaining 12 to 15 seats on the Board are filled by members of the
general public. Regular meetings of the Board of Governors are held five times per
year: twice in the autumn, once in the winter, and twice in the spring. Terms are for
three-years, renewable twice.
Board members are volunteers and may not receive remuneration for their participation.
The Ontario Corporations Act requires that members of the Board be at least 18 years of
age and have no undischarged bankruptcy.
Members of the public are recommended for appointment by the Board’s Human Relations
Committee to those seats designated for community-at-large members. Anyone may apply
or may nominate a candidate for Board membership by completing the Board Membership Nomination Form.
Further details about the Board of Governors are provided in Article 7 of the SJU Act of Incorporation.
